It might not always be easy to say goodbye to the kids in the morning. It can be tempting to want to spend as much time with them as possible until they grow up and move out. But the reality is that most parents do have to part with their children at the school bus stop in the morning.

What's already a tough moment in the day, however, shouldn't have to be a scary one. A fatal Alabama accident that occurred earlier this week is a reminder that safety can't be taken for granted. Accidents happen. Life can be lost, all because of a careless moment behind the wheel.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that while a 5-year-old boy was waiting at his bus stop on Tuesday morning, a parent's nightmare approached him in the form of a supposedly reckless driver. During the simple act of waiting for his school bus, the child ended up being hit by an SUV and died from his crash injuries.

Scarily, he wasn't the only child at the bus stop. But he was the only one to sustain injuries in the wreck. Of course, the community he has left behind is suffering in the form of mourning its loss, and students at the boy's school have counseling available to them.

But beyond the shock and sadness, the pursuit of justice must move forward. Authorities continue to investigate the accident and will confirm whether the driver of the SUV was driving under the influence of alcohol. Depending on what the investigation reveals, criminal charges could result from the incident, but so could a wrongful death lawsuit if the family feels that is what's right.
