Parades are opportunities for creating new, long-lasting memories. They provide the chance to gather with one's community, eat delicious treats and celebrate a special time of year and cause. Recently, the Huntsville community, along with the rest of the country, celebrated Veterans Day.
It is not uncommon for Veterans Day celebrations to involve parades with floats and crowds of people. It is less common, however, that parade-goers would wind up sustaining injuries in a car accident at such an otherwise jovial event. Unfortunately, a few pedestrians attending the Huntsville parade last Friday had their fun interrupted by a crash.
According to news reports, a 54-year-old woman was driving around the parade area when she lost control of her van for some reason. Authorities have not reported the specific reason why the driver lost control of her vehicle that morning, but figuring that out is key to ensuring that she won't cause an accident like this again.
The single-vehicle crash put the driver in the hospital. And when her van flipped, parade-goers were reportedly injured by flying debris that the crash caused. Those pedestrians, ages 8, 40 and 63, all had to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
It's disappointing when anyone is injured in an accident. There's something particularly sad when a joyful event involves the injuries of community members who are excited to celebrate an excellent cause.
It's important for officials to determine why this accident occurred and whether negligence is the cause of the pedestrians' injuries. If new reports reveal such information, we will post an update.
