Infrastructure Developments Corp. and its subsidiary Intelspec International, Inc., which provide worldwide engineering and construction services, primarily for U.S. government agencies and the military, announced on Thursday that they are implementing a safety initiative intended to reduce construction accidents on their job sites around the globe.
The safety initiative, called "Focus on Four," will concentrate on training about and awareness of the four major risk areas for construction accidents: falls, electrical hazards, vehicle and load accidents, and injuries during the operation of heavy equipment. The plan will include safety briefings for all employees and subcontractors, as well as a safety poster campaign.
"Construction accidents account for a major portion of a company's risk exposure," said Infrastructure's CEO Thomas R. Morgan in a press release, "and we are determined to reduce that exposure through education and implementation."
The safety initiative was developed due to an "outstanding" safety record that Intelspec was able to maintain on projects in Thailand and Cambodia. The company relied on the experiences of individual managers and safety officers to develop the plan to reduce the incidence of construction accidents.
Morgan hopes other multinational construction companies will follow suit and develop their own safety awareness programs. "It only takes a small accident to become a big problem; reducing or eliminating these accidents will go a long way to improving the bottom line."
Infrastructure's construction safety awareness program is scheduled to begin in June and continue throughout 2010.
Recent Infrastructure/Intelspec projects for the U.S. military have included construction and management of the U.S. Navy's Close Quarters Battle (CQB) Training Facility at Camp Erawan, Thailand, as well as a number of facilities for the Navy's Global Peace Operations Initiative Training Facilities at Kampong Spoe, Cambodia.
